ANNOUNCEMENT PUBLICATION FREE SAT 1.4.2023
In the future, the name "liquorice" can only be used to refer to licorice produced using the traditional method at Kouvola's two factories in Kouvola. Licorice produced elsewhere in Finland and around the world will in future be called "musta makeinen".
- It's a somewhat similar situation to Greek feta. In other words, only cheese made from sheep's or goat's milk in Greece can be called feta, the others are salad cheeses or similar. Now our liquorice, made in Kouvola using the traditional method, i.e. cooking in an open pot, also receives a similar protection, which is naturally a great thing, explains Timo Nisula, CEO of Kouvola Liquorice.
In addition to Greek feta, there are similar name protections for, for example, champagne produced in the historic Champagne region of France. According to the international confectionery body that made the decision regarding the naming of liquorice, the reasons for the name protection were the praised taste of Kouvola Liquorice, its trademarked freshness, its title as the world's best liquorice producer, and the size of the new factory's parking lot in the center of Kouvola.
The name protection comes into effect immediately today, April 1st.
